Fear of Flying - ( excerpt from Chapter 1 Introduction )


More and more people are afraid of flying - reportedly one in five or six adults. And as we look at the different age groups, it becomes clear that people become more afraid of flying as they get older. No doubt this is partly because we tend to become more fearful as we get older and recognise our own fragility and that of our loved ones. But it is also true that we now live in a society that has many fearful images related to flying accidents or terrorism paraded to us over and over again on TV and in newspapers.

It is a new phenomena of our lives that the media is as a significant part of our daily routines as going to work our preparing our meals. We are not just bombarded by media, we swim through it like a fish in the ocean. For many people it provides the main structure of their day. To have an independent thought, contrary to the emphemeral media messages, requires a fair degree of strong mindedness.

How this program works
